Animal Samaritans Launches $100K Free Spay and Neuter Program for Struggling Pet Owners

Animal Samaritans is rolling out $100,000 in free spay and neuter vouchers for Coachella Valley pet owners who are struggling financially. The nonprofit says the program starts in September and will target a different community each month, with about $10,000 set aside per community.

The first stop will be the unincorporated areas of Riverside County in the Coachella Valley, where the need is highest, according to Animal Samaritans. To find out if they qualify, residents can call 760-343-3477.

The goal is simple: get more pets fixed so fewer end up in shelters. "One of the best ways we can help is spay and neuter," said Maren LeDesma, supervisor at Animal Samaritans and Adoption Alliance. "Sometimes it's hard for people to find the funding, and we don't want that to be a barrier."

LeDesma pointed to a recent case that shows why the funding matters. Animal Samaritans said it worked with an unhoused mother of four who also has four pets, two dogs and two cats that hadn't been spayed or neutered yet. "She reached out to us, and we had the funding available, and we were able to help," LeDesma said. "We got all of them spayed and neutered and ready to go, and we were very grateful to have that opportunity to help out."

Animal Samaritans CEO Tom Snyder said cutting down the number of unwanted litters is the driving force behind bringing the program back. "We know that the most effective way to reduce the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats is to get your pets fixed," Snyder said. "So we're really excited to bring back our free spay and neuter program."
