Palo Verde Hospital Takes Steps Toward Stability After Financial Crisis
Palo Verde Hospital in Blythe is turning a corner months after facing a financial crisis that put the future of the hospital in jeopardy.
The hospital came dangerously close to closing its doors in January after filing for bankruptcy, but support from federal, state, county, and city leaders helped keep the facility open.
An emergency loan, along with $10 million in Medi-Cal funding, provided critical financial support while long-term solutions were developed.
Riverside University Health System is now temporarily overseeing operations at the hospital, and staff say improvements are already being seen, especially in the emergency department.
“We're just providing an addition and a collaboration to the great care that they give,” said a Riverside University Health System representative. “We were able to bring on a new physician group, which has been great and supportive to the community and to the staff here at Palo Verde Hospital.”
The hospital has also received new equipment designed to improve patient care, including an infant baby warmer to help maintain proper temperatures for newborns and a new EKG machine to monitor heart activity and assist doctors during emergencies.
“We've been able to bring in some new equipment,” hospital representatives said. “For example, an infant baby warmer that keeps the temperatures at the appropriate level. We've brought in the new EKG machine that helps monitor different areas of the heart and identify the patient needs in case of an emergency.”
Hospital leaders say stabilization efforts are ongoing, but they remain hopeful about the future of Palo Verde Hospital and its ability to continue providing care to the Blythe community.
