New Air Force One Raises Security Questions After Trump Flies Older Aircraft

President Donald Trump’s newly converted Air Force One has taken flight, but questions remain about whether the aircraft is fully equipped to handle the security threats faced by the president.

When Trump left Turkey this week, he boarded a 35-year-old modified Boeing 747 instead of the newer aircraft that had recently been unveiled. The decision drew attention as the United States launched strikes on Iran, which shares a border with Turkey.

The aircraft, donated by Qatar and converted for presidential use, underwent about a year of upgrades. However, aviation and security experts say the accelerated timeline has raised questions about whether every critical system was completed before the plane entered service.

The White House said the modifications focused on essential systems, including security and secure communications. However, many details about Air Force One’s defensive capabilities remain classified.

Experts pointed to questions surrounding missile defense systems, electronic warfare capabilities, communications equipment and protections against potential threats such as electromagnetic pulses from nuclear attacks.

Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said a full conversion to Air Force One standards would typically take several years because the aircraft must support presidential communications, medical needs and security requirements.

The new aircraft does include improvements, including more fuel-efficient engines, a larger size and longer range compared with the current presidential fleet. But observers say some capabilities found on the older aircraft may not yet be matched.

Air Force One is designed to function as a “flying White House,” with secure communications, medical facilities and systems that allow the president to continue leading the country from the air.

The aircraft will eventually be replaced by new Boeing jets currently being developed for presidential use. Until then, officials and experts continue to debate whether the newly converted plane is ready for the full range of challenges facing the commander in chief.
