Manny the Movie Guy's Opening Day Picks at Palm Springs ShortFest: "The Volunteer" and "Welcome to Tool Shed"

Hey everybody, Manny the Movie Guy here — and ShortFest is officially underway right here in the desert!

The 32nd edition of the Palm Springs International ShortFest has kicked off at the Festival Theaters on East Tahquitz Canyon Way, and North America's largest short film festival is already delivering. More than 300 short films. Seventy-one countries. One week in the desert to discover the next great voice in cinema. And on opening day, two films with deep roots right here in the Coachella Valley are already standing out from the crowd.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with the filmmakers behind both — and before either film even screens, one of their subjects is already out in the community doing what he does best.

First, a Morning of Giving: Luis Yepiz and Farmlink Feed the Hungry

Before The Volunteer screens at noon on Tuesday, its subject — food rights activist and Farmlink Project Chief Procurement Officer Luis Yepiz — will be out in the morning doing what he has always done: feeding people in need, with help from Farmlink.

That is who Luis Yepiz is. The film comes second. The work comes first.

And that, right there, tells you everything you need to know about why this documentary deserves your attention.

12:00 PM — The Volunteer (World Premiere)

The Volunteer is making its world premiere right here at ShortFest — and it could not feel more at home in the Coachella Valley.

Directed by Owen Dubeck, the short documentary follows Luis Yepiz, a longtime food access advocate who serves as Chief Procurement Officer of the Farmlink Project — a nonprofit born out of the pandemic that has now delivered more than 100 million pounds of nutritious food to communities facing hunger across the country, including right here in our valley. Dubeck himself is a founding member of Farmlink, and his previous documentaries have raised tens of millions of dollars for social causes and screened at festivals from Austin to Sun Valley.

With The Volunteer, he turns the camera on one of Farmlink's most vital figures — a man who has spent decades building bridges between those in need and the agricultural system that can help them. But this is not just a portrait of a selfless activist. The film also confronts something deeply human: a life-threatening medical emergency that forced Yepiz to stop, reassess, and reckon with the personal cost of a life devoted to others.

In my interview with Luis, what struck me most was his absolute refusal to make the story about himself. He talks about the communities he serves. He talks about the farmers. He talks about the gap between abundance and hunger that Farmlink exists to close. That humility — that sense that the work is always bigger than the person doing it — is what makes him such a compelling subject and what makes Dubeck's film so moving.

This is a world premiere with local roots, a global mission, and a story that will stay with you long after you leave the theater.

2:00 PM — Welcome to Tool Shed: From Cannes to the Desert

If The Volunteer is a story about feeding the body, Welcome to Tool Shed is a story about feeding the soul — and about the spaces and communities that make survival possible.

I sat down with co-directors Daniel M. Talbott and Andrew Klaus-Vineyard, and I can tell you: these two made something truly special. Welcome to Tool Shed dives into the community of LGBTQ senior citizens who gather at the Tool Shed — a long-standing leather bar and sanctuary for queer people right here in Palm Springs. Made guerrilla-style on a shoestring budget, the film traces the stories of patrons who are among the oldest survivors of the AIDS epidemic — exploring their chosen family, their resilience, and their very real fears about a political climate that threatens the spaces they fought so hard to protect.

What makes this film extraordinary is how personal it gets. These are not talking-head interviews about history. These are living, breathing people whose stories ARE history — people who lost entire generations of friends, who rebuilt community from the ground up, and who now find themselves once again having to defend their right to simply exist and gather together.

Talbott and Klaus-Vineyard told me they wanted to make a film that felt like you were actually sitting at the bar with these people — not observing from a distance, but truly in the room. That intimacy is exactly what they achieved.

And the world took notice. Earlier this spring, Welcome to Tool Shed screened at the American Pavilion's Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival in France — one of just twenty short films selected for that prestigious platform on the world's biggest cinematic stage. From Cannes to Palm Springs. From the south of France to the desert streets where this story was born.

There is something deeply right about that journey coming full circle here at ShortFest — at a festival that has long celebrated queer voices, in a city that has long been a sanctuary for the LGBTQ community.

ShortFest 2026: The Big Picture

This is just day one, and already ShortFest is delivering the kind of intimate, powerful storytelling that makes this festival unlike anything else. The 32nd edition runs through June 29, with Oscar-qualifying awards and $30,000 in prizes to be announced on June 28 — followed by the Best of the Fest program on the final day.

This festival has launched the careers of filmmakers like Ava DuVernay, Denis Villeneuve, Taika Waititi, and Emerald Fennell. The next great voice in cinema could be sitting right here in the Coachella Valley this week. Do not miss it.
