Shore Fire Now 25% Contained as Smoke Drifts Into the Coachella Valley
Firefighters gained ground overnight on the Shore Fire, with containment now at 25% as of Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out Monday afternoon near Lake Shore Drive and San Timoteo Canyon Road, southwest of Calimesa, and spread rapidly after dark, growing from around 150 acres to more than 2,600 acres by early Tuesday. Smoke from the blaze has been drifting into the west end of the Coachella Valley, and if you've stepped outside this morning, you've likely noticed it in the air.
Crews from Riverside County, Cal Fire, Hemet, and Palm Springs fire departments are all working the fire, along with air tankers making runs on the flames. The terrain is rugged and difficult to cover on foot, though ground and air resources worked through the night to strengthen containment lines.
Evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for parts of the Calimesa and Beaumont area. If you or someone you know needs to leave, an evacuation shelter for people and pets is open at Valley View High School, located at 13135 Nason St. in Moreno Valley. Large animals can be taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus at 581 S. Grand Ave. in San Jacinto.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
