Trump Strikes Deal with Iran, Heads to G7 Summit
President Trump is heading to the G7 Summit in France today, arriving with a newly announced deal he says will end the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping lanes for oil. The agreement, brokered by Pakistan, is set to be signed Friday.
According to Iranian state media, the deal includes 14 points, among them Iran reaffirming its commitment not to produce nuclear weapons, while billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds would be released. Pakistan's Prime Minister said both sides agreed to immediately and permanently end fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Democrats were quick to draw comparisons to the Obama-era nuclear agreement that Trump walked away from in 2018. "We're getting basically less than what we had under the JCPOA, which President Trump walked away from," said Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushed back, saying the approach was fundamentally different: "Obama, they begged Iran for a deal, and we bombed Iran."
The summit itself is unfolding in Evian-les-Bains, France, with a heavy security presence surrounding the meetings. About an hour away in Geneva, protesters filled the streets Sunday, voicing frustrations over the Middle East conflict, the economy, and environmental protections.
Trump heads into the summit facing allies he has accused of not doing enough during the Iran conflict, and who have pushed back against his administration's tariff and trade policies.
