Cathedral City Residents Invited to Shape New Development Rules Before June 12 Deadline

Cathedral City is asking residents to weigh in on a sweeping update to how the city controls growth and development, and the window to comment is closing fast.
The city held its third community meeting on the Draft Development Code this week at the Cathedral City Branch Library, drawing residents out to review a document that will determine where and how future housing, businesses, and other projects can be built across the city. The written comment period closes Friday, June 12, at 5:00 p.m. Comments can be submitted through the project website at zonecathedralcity.com.
The update is the city's first comprehensive overhaul of its zoning and subdivision rules since 1981, and city officials say the existing code no longer reflects how Cathedral City has grown or where it wants to go. The new Development Code would bring zoning, subdivision regulations, and design standards together into one document, aligned with the Cathedral City 2040 General Plan.
According to the project schedule, the community engagement phase runs through September 2026, with a Planning Commission study session set for June 17 and 18. An environmental review follows in the summer before the City Council is expected to adopt the final code in November 2026.
Residents, business owners, and property owners who missed this week’s open house can still review the draft materials online and submit feedback before the Friday deadline.
