Young Writers Take Center Stage at Palm Springs Playwrights Festival
The next generation of storytellers took center stage this afternoon at the 9th Annual Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.
This year’s winning student playwrights watched their original works come to life through live staged readings performed by accomplished actors and guided by directors from theater, film and television.
Festival organizers say the event is designed to inspire and support creative writing among students throughout Riverside County while giving young writers firsthand experience in a professional theatrical setting.
In the months leading up to the showcase, participants worked closely with television writer and producer Greg Cope White to refine their scripts and prepare for performance.
One returning participant said the experience offered a unique perspective after previously winning the festival as a playwright.
Festival organizers say the success of the event comes from the originality and emotional depth of the student submissions, ranging from heartfelt dramas to comedies like this year’s “The Rats of Broadway.”
In addition to staged readings, the annual festival also offers mentorship and scholarship opportunities to help students continue pursuing arts education and creative storytelling.
